Did You Know?
Companies House has strict regulations on company names in the UK.
Some names are completely prohibited and cannot be used.
Certain names require special approval and supporting documents.
Using restricted words like “Royal” or “Bank” needs official consent.
Ensuring compliance avoids delays and legal issues during registration.
The name must not be identical or too similar to an existing company name on the Companies House register. Check availability using our Company Name Search feature.
Words like “Royal,” “Bank,” “Government,” or “Association” require special approval. You may need supporting documentation to justify using these terms. See the full list of restricted words.
Names must not include offensive, discriminatory, or inappropriate language. It cannot falsely imply an association with government, authorities, or official bodies.
Private limited companies must end with “Limited” or “Ltd” (except for exempt companies). Welsh companies can use “Cyfyngedig” or “Cyf” instead.
Company names must not exceed 160 characters. Avoid unnecessary punctuation, symbols, or special characters.
A name may be available with Companies House but still be trademarked by another business.Search the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) database to avoid trademark conflicts.Consider securing a matching domain name for your online presence.
Your company’s official registered name can differ from your trading name. However, the trading name must also comply with UK naming rules and must not be misleading.
